Suspected Gang Member With Loaded Handgun In Santa Rosa Arrested After Foot Chase

SANTA ROSA (CBS SF) -- A suspected gang member with a loaded handgun in his waistband was one of two people arrested after a brief foot pursuit in unincorporated Santa Rosa early Saturday morning, Sonoma County sheriff's officials said.

Deputies were patrolling the area of Sunset and McMinn avenues around 12:30 a.m. Sunday when they spotted multiple people trying to hide behind a fence and row of trees, according to the sheriff's office.

There had been gang graffiti sprayed in the area recently, so the deputies stopped to investigate. Two of the suspects immediately ran west on Sunset Avenue and the deputies gave chase, sheriff's officials said.

The pair was caught and identified as Jose de los Santos and Ivan Martinez, both 18-year-old Santa Rosa residents. When de los Santos was arrested, a 9mm handgun was found in his waistband, according to the sheriff's office.

He was booked into Sonoma County Jail on suspicion of possession of a concealed firearm, carrying a loaded firearm in public while active in a street gang, participation in a street gang and resisting arrest. Martinez was also arrested on suspicion of resisting arrest, sheriff's officials said.
