East Bay Congressman Says U.S. Must Lead Regional Effort To Attack ISIS

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)— On this weekend's episode of Meet The Press, NBC's Chuck Todd asked President Obama if he was preparing the country to go back to war. The president said he's preparing the country to deal with a threat from ISIL, the interchangeable term for ISIS, or the extremist terrorist group, Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham.

East Bay Congressman U.S. Rep. Eric Swalwell, who just returned from a trip to the Middle East as part of a bi-partisan, congressional delegation, said he believes the U.S. must lead a regional effort to attack ISIS.

"I was really pressing on the countries we met with. They have to stand up and put their men and women on the front lines because their countries are the ones who face an existential threat of ISIS running over them," Swalwell said.

Israel, Jordan and Egypt were among the countries Swalwell visited on his trip.

The president didn't offer any more details in his interview, but many in Washington say he will outline plans to continue aerial attacks on the para-military terrorist organization. President Obama will speak to the nation on Wednesday to address the continuing threat of ISIS in Iraq and Syria.

It is not known if the president will ask Congress to authorize the use of force.
