Customer Left Inside When San Francisco Fisherman's Wharf Store When Employees Lock Up For Night

SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX 5) -- Police got a chuckle after finding out a man inside a closed San Francisco Fisherman's Wharf store was not a burglar, but a customer who got left behind.

When employees closed up the Majestic Gallery Tuesday night they remembered to lock the doors, but failed to notice a man still inside.

Audio from the San Francisco Police dispatcher made it clear: "Be advised that it appears like this person was shopping in the store and didn't realize that they closed and locked up on him…"

It appeared the man was still browsing through the fine art boutique when he discovered the staff had already left for the night. He called for help but it doesn't sound like he got much sympathy from the police department.

Dispatcher: "…he's actually locked inside the store…"
Officer: "…get that genius out of there…"

Dispatcher: "10-4…he also says there are chains across the front door."
Officer: "Go figure."

Many of the store's pieces are massive and it does seem possible to lose track of someone.

"We were just in there trying to inquire how much something was and we kind of got blown off," said tourist Matthew Gardner of Sacramento. "So I could easily see how someone could get locked in there."

Employees at the store Wednesday said they hadn't heard anything about it.

It hasn't been an easy summer for Majestic. In June the store was cited for placing heavy statues out on the sidewalk that led to the accidental death of a young boy.

And last night the police had a difficult time contacting the manager.

Dispatcher: "We can't find a number for them right now."
Officer: "Alright, these idiots might have to sleep on the floor, then."

The manager was eventually contacted and the shopper was freed but after this he may be asking, 'who's minding the store?'

The store shows a closing time of 9:00 p.m., but the police call came in at 8:45, so it appears the store may have been locked up a little early.
