SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) — Illegal contact and illegal use of hands penalties are way up in the NFL this season. “It just shows how much they were getting away with before,” John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew.
“The league gave too much away. They let defensive backs do too much after that five yards, you know, holding and pushing. And offensive guys were (doing that) too.”
Madden doesn’t buy the theory that the penalties are an attempt to favor the offense and increase scoring. “I’m not sure that anyone ever said that we have to get more scoring in the league, or that we have to get more passing. We have plenty of it… If that’s the rule (that) after five yards you can’t grab them or push them or do those things, then that’s the rule. And maybe the officials just let them get away with too much (before).”
