Fire Crews In Gilroy Fight Massive 3-Alarm Pallet Fire

GILROY (KCBS) — Three separate fire departments battled a three-alarm fire at a pallet yard in Gilroy Wednesday morning, authorities said.

Crews from Cal Fire, San Jose and Gilroy , including 11 engines, responded to the fire that started about 4 a.m. at 2713 Ferguson Road, a Cal Fire spokesman said.

Large flames were visible from Highway 101.

At about 7:10 a.m. KCBS' Matt Bigler reported the flames were mostly knocked down with white smoke visible, although there was still a small area where black and gray smoke plumed.

Cal Fire Battalion Chief Scott Witt told KCBS the fire had been initially reported as debris fire but soon escalated.

"It ended up being probably 10,000 pallets that were on fire, which spread into the barn. We were able to stop the fire before it completely destroyed the very large barn," he said.

While the side of barn that was facing the face did suffer some damage, the rest of the two-story structure appeared to be undamaged.

Because of the remote location, there was no water access so Cal fire crews had to call in water tenders from multiple agencies including the San Jose, Gilroy and Santa Clara County fire departments.

No cause for the fire has been determined and no injuries have been reported.

Investigators are en route, Witt said.

Ferguson Road is closed at Dunlap Avenue and drivers are advised to use Highway 152 to Highway 101 as an alternate route.
