Oakland's 'Bottom 8' Mayoral Candidates Say They're Not Getting Fair News Coverage

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)— 15 candidates are running for mayor of Oakland in the 2014 race, but at least eight candidates claim that they don't get enough media coverage.

At a news conference Tuesday, one by one the candidates who call themselves "the bottom 8", blasted the top seven candidates and the news organizations that largely or completely ignore them.

"They call us the bottom eight candidates. How can they be so visual and we're not? Tell me that," said Ken Houston, a contractor.

"I'm running for mayor because I'm fed up," said Nancy Sidebotham, a tax preparer.

Both agree they'd make great leaders because they're beholden to no one and are accepting no donations.

As for qualifications and experience to run Oakland, Charles Williams said his experience in the Navy would be helpful.

"If it was a launch system, missile-launch system, you name it. If it was mechanical I had to work on it," Williams said.

Between them, they're polling near zero. To make it even funnier (or sadder) there was a dog named Einstein with posters that read he's been a loyal dog and that he'd even make a loyal mayor.

Pat McCollough was another candidate on hand who spoke out about not receiving enough news media coverage in their efforts to be elected mayor.
