Novato Homeowner, 2 Teens Arrested After Underage Drinking Party

NOVATO (CBS SF) -- A Novato homeowner and parent is in hot water after police say a party with underage drinking was hosted in his home.

Police say Alex Koehler was hosting more than fifty students, and was aware of underage drinking at the home during the party that prompted calls to police from nearby neighbors.

Two underage teens were arrested, along with Koehler.  Police say drunken kids were seen stumbling around the neighborhood, with one holding a liquor bottle.

Novato has a Social Host Ordinance, which holds homeowners responsible for large gatherings of minors involving underage drinking.

Novato Police Sergeant Mike Howard says homeowners should be aware of the consequences.

"They should educate themselves on the social host ordinance.  It's not hard to find.  Not only has it been in print, on the radio, on the news, it's available on the internet.  Children can probably tell them about it," Howard said.
