11-Year-Old Boy Drown In Aptos Swimming Pool

APTOS (CBS SF) -- An 11-year-old boy died Friday after accidentally falling into a swimming pool in the unincorporated Santa Cruz County area of Aptos despite a sheriff's deputy's attempt to save him, a sheriff's spokesman said Monday.

The boy, who is not yet being identified, had been reported missing Friday afternoon and deputies started looking for him in the neighborhood of his home in the 1000 block of Via Tomasol in Aptos, Santa Cruz County sheriff's Sgt. Kelly Kent said.

One of the deputies saw the boy underwater inside a swimming pool at a town home complex, drove into the water to get him out and immediately performed CPR on him, Kent said.

Emergency responders transported the child to a hospital but despite efforts to save him, the boy died at 4:55 p.m. Friday, Kent said.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing but it appears the boy fell into the pool by accident, Kent said.

It had rained in the area Friday and the pool was deserted when the deputy found the boy inside it, he said.
