'Last Cow' Oldest Bison In San Francisco Golden Gate Park Dies

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)— The oldest bison in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park died on Monday. According to a release from The San Francisco Zoo, Last Cow, a 22-year-old female, passed away after zoo animal staff had been monitoring her declining health for several months.

The bison are cared for by the San Francisco Zoological Society and live in Golden Gate Park's Bison Meadow, a popular tourist attraction.

"We take special care to accommodate the needs of our geriatric animals. Her longevity can be attributed to the great care provided by her animal care staff," said Graham Crawford, SF Zoo Chief of Veterinary Services.

Last Cow was considered to be in advanced age for her species. She was reportedly an original descendant of a 1984 birthday present to former San Francisco Mayor and current U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein from her husband, Richard Blum.

The six remaining bison in the park, brought in to "enhance the aging herd" are each three-years old.
