Google Barge 'Showrooms' Sink In Coast Guard's Safety Concerns
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) — The Google barge projects that received so much media attention last year in San Francisco and Portland, Me. where they mysteriously appeared then suddenly left ended due to safety issues, according to a newspaper report.
The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday that obtained emails show the U.S. Coast Guard held concerns about the amount of fuel and other flammable materials aboard the barge's decks—as well as the number of people.
As far back as March of 2013, the Coast Guard discussed these issues with Google.
Last fall, KPIX 5 uncovered plans for the mystery structure to become a massive floating showroom for Google and their Google Glass wearable technology. It was later revealed that the Portland project was also under construction.
Google eventually suspended the sercetive $35 million projects moving the San Francisco barge to a port in Stockton where it still sits. The barge in Maine was dismantled and sold for scrap last summer.
