Bird Strike Grounds Plane At Oakland Airport

OAKLAND (CBS/AP) -- A Seattle-bound Alaska Airlines jetliner carrying 150 people returned to the Oakland International Airport shortly after takeoff after hitting a bird. No injuries were reported.

Oakland International Airport spokesman Brian Kidd says the plane encountered the bird strike at 7:01 p.m. PST Friday and landed without incident about 20 minutes later.

Kidd says Flight 349 had taken off for Seattle at 6:47 p.m.

Alaska Airlines spokeswoman Halley Knigge says the plane returned out of "an abundance of caution." It was being inspected Friday night. There was no word on the kind of bird.

She says the plane was carrying 144 passengers and six crew members.

The plane was inspected and was kept in Oakland.

Knigge said passengers would be getting a new aircraft to depart at midnight, arriving into Seattle around 2 a.m.
