Californians Signing Up For Health Care Insurance In Person, Or Online As Open Enrollment Begins Again

MILLBRAE (KCBS) -- Across California and around the country, hundreds of thousands of people began signing up for health care, as day one of the second open enrollment cycle under the Affordable Care Act got underway, Saturday.

In Millbrae, it was a busy day for certified Covered California counselors who helped people sign up for coverage.

Millbrae Library was one of 200 places set up throughout the state where people could get help.

The state run health exchange website has been upgraded since last year and people can sign up online for coverage.

But for folks who don't have a computer, or who need help with the process, a physical place is better.

Barry Hooey of San Francisco was one of about 50 people who showed up at the Millbrae Library in the first hour of their Covered California sign-up event sponsored by the City of Millbrae. He wanted to make sure he did it right.

"I just graduated from school," said Hooey. "I used to have university insurance but now that I'm done, I either sign up, or I get fined."

Thirteen counselors were on hand working non-stop for three hours. San Mateo Board of Supervisors President Dave Pine was on hand, too. He said the counselors provide a human touch.

"To be here and have a person walk you through is comforting," said Pine.

Open enrollment runs until February 15. To sign up in California, visit www.coveredca.com. To find an enrollment event near you, visit the Covered California website, http://events.coveredca.com/.
