City Of Oakland Asks Residents To Adopt, Clean Storm Drains

OAKLAND (CBS SF) - Officials from the City of Oakland say they'd like the public's help keeping storm drains clean this rainy season.

The city is asking for volunteers to "Adopt A Drain" and keep one of about 10,000 free of leaves and trash. People willing to volunteer the time can sign on to adoptadrain.com and pick the most convenient drain from a map.

The program is part of Oakland's Adopt-A-Spot program, in which volunteers clean up trash and graffiti and plant trees, paint or otherwise beautify an area.

So far a few dozen people have picked out drains to maintain. Clear drains not only keep streets dryer, but reduce the risk of sewage backup into groundwater.
