Narsai David Food News: 2 Reds, 1 White From J. Lohr Vineyards In Paso Robles

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)— This week's wine recommendations come from J. Lohr Estates in Paso Robles. 2012's Paso Robles Syrah has a medium-deep red color with a very appealing aroma of fruit and berries. Ripe-fruit flavors are upfront on the palate of this soft and nicely-balanced selection with just a touch of oak. 20 percent of the barrels were new so it's just a hint of oak. At $15 a bottle, it's an especially appealing price and would be fine with your holiday turkey if you like a red with your festive dinner.

By contrast, the 2012 J. Lohr Gesture Syrah possesses a full-deep crimson intensity and richness on the palate for a more upscale approach.  The complexity of flavor reflects a bit more oak as 50 percent are from new barrels. The flavors keep roiling on the palate and there's just enough tannin for balance. If you open the bottle now, it'd be perfect with a steak, but if you let it mellow with a couple years of age, it will develop even more.

For something a little more out of the ordinary, try the 2012 J. Lohr Gesture RVG. That stands for Rousanne, Viognier and Grenache Blanc. This is a $30 white wine with an intriguing quality that sort of lingers on your palate. There's enough Viognier to provide fruit, but not so much that it overpowers everything else.
