Sandoval Reaches $100 Million, 5-Year Deal With Boston Red Sox
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- Looks like Pandamonium is coming to Boston now that Giants' Pablo Sandoval has agreed to a deal with the Red Sox.
Sandoval will receive close to $100 million for five years -- $10 million more than the Giants' offer.
The Giants offered the free agent third baseman the same contract given to Hunter Pence, five years at $90 million. Sandoval wanted that deal last Spring when Giants were suspicious about Sandoval's physical condition. But when that offer came after the World Series, Sandoval countered by asking for a seven year deal, according to KPIX 5 Sports Director Dennis O'Donnell.
O'Donnell said the Giants were never Sandoval's first choice, which is why the 28-year-old asked for seven years -- a request the Giants were highly unlikely to accommodate.
The two-time all star won three World Series rings in five years. In the postseason, he's hit .366 in 17 games.
The Red Sox also just signed infielder Hanley Ramirez to a five year $90 million deal, giving them the two premiere free agent hitters available this off-season.
The Giants released a statement Monday saying "His connection with Giants fans - young and old - is truly special and he will be greatly missed."
