Pedestrian In Crosswalk Dies After Getting Pinned Under A Rental Truck In San Leandro

SAN LEANDRO (CBS SF) -- A man in his 70s died Friday after being pinned underneath a rental truck while crossing the street in San Leandro, a police spokesman said.

San Leandro police and the Alameda County Fire Department responded to a report of a vehicle versus pedestrian collision at 11:20 a.m. at the intersection of Washington Avenue and Monterey Boulevard, Lt. Robert McManus said.

Officers found an elderly man, believed to be in his 70s, pinned underneath a rental truck, McManus said. Fire crews used equipment to lift the vehicle and remove the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

McManus said the driver of the rental truck has been cooperative with investigators and alcohol or drugs are not a factor in the collision.

Police are not releasing the driver's name while the Alameda County District Attorney's Office investigates whether or not criminal charges should be filed, McManus said.

Witnesses told police the man was crossing Washington Avenue in a crosswalk when the driver of the rental truck turned onto Washington Avenue from Monterey Boulevard, McManus said. Police are still interviewing witnesses.

"This is very tragic, especially during the holiday season," McManus said. "We offer our condolences to the family and friends of the man that was involved in this unfortunate collision."

Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact the San Leandro Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division at (510) 577-3230.
