Former Uber Driver Faces Misdemeanor Vehicular Manslaughter Charge After Fatally Striking Girl
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- A former Uber driver, involved in a collision in San Francisco that killed in a six-year-old girl last December, has been charged with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter, the District Attorney's spokesman said.
Muzzaffar, 57, of Union City, is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday morning.
Police originally booked Muzzaffar for vehicular manslaughter and failure to yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk after he fatally struck Sophia Liu, injuring her 4-year-old brother and 34-year-old mother, on Dec. 31, 2013 at Polk and Ellis streets.
But based on evidence from the investigation by the District Attorney's Office, the decision to charge Muzzaffar with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter was made, Assistant District Attorney Alex Bastian told the San Francisco Examiner.
After an arrest warrant was issued, Muzzafar turned himself in to authorities and was released on $50,000 bail.
Muzzafar did not have a passenger at the time of the collision, but was driving around, looking for a fare on the Uber App.
Uber originally denied that he was actually working at the time of the incident.
The case was one of many that brought greater scrutiny to ride services such as Uber.
