Mysterious Meatballs, Chopped Onions Found In San Francisco Put Dog Owners Back On Edge

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- There's a new warning for pet owners in San Francisco after a mysterious meatball rushed one dog to the emergency room.

Sarah Morris was walking her dog Taco in Potrero Hill this week when he started eating an object off the sidewalk. Morris reached into his mouth to grab whatever he ate and immediately panicked when she saw the meatball.

Morris knows the horror stories. In two years, poisonous meatballs have popped up all over San Francisco. Some laced with strychnine, others stuffed with pills.

The meatballs got many dogs sick and even killed a dachshund.

Worried her dog would be the next victim, Morris rushed Taco to the San Francisco Society for the Prevention and Cruelty to Animals. With dog poisonings, timing is critical.

After a day in the hospital, Taco received a clean bill of health. Now Animal Control is testing the meatballs to see it it's poisonous.

Around the same time, a Reddit user said he found about eight pounds of onions buried just beneath the surface of the sand when he was walking his dog at Fort Funston Monday afternoon. Onions contain an ingredient called thiosulphate which is toxic and can cause a pet's red blood cells to burst.

"Someone went to great efforts to come to this area, chop up the onions (probably 3 very large onions, as I found 3 cores), and then spread them out over about 100 square feet and then cover them with a bit of sand to make them harder for us to find, but easy for dogs to sniff out and eat," he wrote in the post.

After removing the onions, he said he filed a report at the Park Ranger station, but has yet to hear back. Animal Control has not received any reports related to this incident.
