Man Who Escaped Monterey County Jail Still On Loose

SALINAS (CBS SF) -- The Monterey County Sheriff's Office and other law enforcement officers are searching for a 23-year-old man who escaped from county jail in Salinas on Christmas Day, deputies said Sunday.

Freddy Swanson, in custody on weapons and illegal drug possession charges, fled the jail on Thursday and authorities believe he may still be in the Monterey Peninsula area, according to sheriff's Sgt. Ray Tongol.

The county's STING task force, made up of local and state law enforcement officers, is heading the search for Swanson, Tongol said.

The task force includes officers from the state Department of Justice, the California Highway Patrol, Salinas Police Department and the Sheriff's Office, according to deputies.

Swanson is described as Caucasian, with brown hair, 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighing 160 pounds, deputies said.

The Sheriff's Office is asking anyone with information about Swanson's whereabouts to phone the office at (831) 755-3700.
