San Francisco Opens Waiting List For Nearly 200 Housing Units To Homeless Applicants
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)— San Francisco's Housing Authority is now accepting applications for its public housing waiting list for the first time since 2010, but the homeless have just under a week to apply and the only way to do so is online.
City and federal funds are allowing the Housing Authority to rehabilitate almost 200 public housing units, but the window of opportunity is tight as applicants only have from Tuesday through Sunday to submit their information.
"What we're doing is a targeted waiting list opening for homeless families and individuals to get on our waiting list for units that will become available over the next 12 months," said Velma Navarro, deputy executive director and chief operating officer at the Housing Authority.
If an applicant is chosen off the wait list, Navarro said they need to bring the appropriate documentation to prove who they are as well as documentation showing any family members or co-habitants that they've asked to be included in their application.
Navarro said computers are available at public libraries, as well as several non-profits including; the Tenderloin Technology Lab, St. Vincent De Paul Society and the SF LGBT Community Center. They can also access the Housing Authority's offices on the third floor at 1815 Egbert Ave. to apply online.
Navarro said there could be anywhere from 3,000 to 5,000 who will apply to be on the waiting list and understands that there's not enough space and that in the first year not many from the pool on the list will get housing.
