What Makes A City Gay? Salt Lake City, Boise, Dayton Top Advocate List, SF Does Not

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- The gayest city in America is Dayton, Ohio, with Salt Lake City and Boise, Idaho making the list.   San Francisco did not.

In an unusual ranking of cities based on random concepts like how many chapters of the Pink Pistols gay gun club, its transgender friendliness, gay retirement communities, and gay-friendly synogogagues and mosques Advocate.com is making a point that some cities deserve credit for queerness, even if they're not normally thought of ahead of Bay Area 'burbs.  And, they want journalists to write about their list.  Both missions accomplished.

ADVOCATE.COM GAY CITIES: This list is all about the queerness of some less-expected locales.

Boise makes it, "...because of its theater scene that brings in big-name Broadway shows like The Book of Mormon, Jersey Boys, and Mamma Mia!, as well as its LGBT anti-discrimination ordinance that was passed in 2012. Boise is also home to the Idaho Gay Rodeo Association, a chapter of the International Gay Rodeo Association (IGRA.com), and the active Boise Pridefest, which recently sponsored a fund-raising concert tour across Idaho," writes Advocate.com

Dayton also gets honors for its theater scene and a transgender-inclusive anti-discrimination ordinance.
