DUI Suspect Rams Two CHP Pursuit Cars During Chase Though Oakland Streets

OAKLAND (KCBS) — A 40-year-old man was arrested in Oakland early Thursday morning after he allegedly led California Highway Patrol officers on a chase that eventually ended when he rammed into two pursuit vehicles.

CHP spokesman Officer Sean Wilkenfeld told KCBS it started at about 2:45 a.m. when officers tried to pull over a black Chevy Impala on the Coolidge Avenue off-ramp of Interstate Highway 580 for a DUI check.

After initially stopping, the driver sped off and led officers on brief chase on surface streets.

Wilkenfeld said officers twice used the PIT maneuver—a pursuit immobilization technique—to stop the vehicle. The driver then rammed the two patrol vehicles.

"We actually used that maneuver twice. The second time it was successful and it did immobilize it temporarily. Unfortunately, following that he did choose to ram two of our patrol vehicles. He ran in reverse into one and then gunned it forward and hit the other one," he said

Wilkenfeld said no one was injured and the driver was arrested for multiple charges including DUI, felony evading an officer and a weapons charge.

Two passengers in the vehicle were questioned and released.
