8-Year-Old-Girl Sexually Assaulted In Toy Aisle Of Hayward Dollar Store; Suspect Fled

HAYWARD (CBS SF/BCN)-- An 8-year-old girl was sexually assaulted in the toy aisle of a Cherryland dollar store on Sunday afternoon, an Alameda County sheriff's sergeant said.

The girl was in the toy aisle of the 99 Cents Only store at 20882 Mission Blvd. at about 1:45 p.m. Sunday when a man grabbed her and put his hand in her pants, sheriff's Sgt. Ray Kelly said.

"The little girl explained that while she was in one of the aisles playing with the toys, a man approach her and sexually assaulted her," Kelly told KCBS. "This particular assault was pretty heinous not to mention the fact that it was an 8-year-old girl but in the manner in which it was carried out. The suspect threatened the child to not say anything. The suspect then fled out of the store pretty nonchalantly."

The girl and her mother waited at the store for sheriff's investigators and described the assault. They said the suspect was a black or Latino man in his late teens standing 6 feet tall with a light complexion.

He had a flattop haircut and was wearing a white T-shirt, dark jeans and black tennis shoes, Kelly said.

The girl was taken to UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland for a sexual assault exam.

"We're working diligently to find the suspect," Kelly said. "This is an egregious crime and we will leave no stone unturned."

Investigators are asking anyone with information about the assault to contact the sheriff's special victims unit at (510) 667-3645 or an anonymous tip line at (510) 667-3622.
