Drone Rules Released, FAA Plan Would Allow Businesses, Media, Farmers To Fly UAVs

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- The FAA released long-awaited proposed rules for commercial drone use Sunday.

Operators would have to keep drones to a speed below 100 mph, below 500 feet, and in their line of sight, meaning companies like Amazon would not be able to deliver small packages unless they had someone watching the drone the entire time.

"We have many, many organizations that want to fly commercially that need this new rule to move forward," President and CEO of the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International Brian Wynne said.

The government will take at least a year to finalize the new rules.
