Oakland's 'Radical Brownies' Troop To Change Name After Getting A Call From The Girl Scouts
OAKLAND (CBS SF) – The "Radical Brownies," a troop of Oakland girls focused on social justice issues, announced they would change their name following a notice from the Girl Scouts.
In a note posted on the Radical Brownies Facebook page, the troop said they were contacted by the Girl Scouts last week. While they congratulated them on the new group, the scouts also said using the name word "Brownie" was causing confusion.
"We love adults who want to stand up on behalf of girls. This was all friendly, no lawyers involved," said Kelly Parisi, Chief Communications Officer for Girl Scouts of the U.S.A.
"It [the Radical Brownies] was causing some confusion among our membership about affiliation given their uniform and use of our name."
Parisi said she called the founder and, "When I informed her of that, they obviously offered to change their name."
"They graciously offered to change their name and we graciously gave them time to discuss it with their leaders and work on a new name in a way that reflects their needs and priorities," said Parisi.
The Radical Brownies' note went onto say the group plans to reveal a new name sometime after March 7th and looks to establish more troops.
The troop was founded by Marilyn Hollinquest and her friend Anayvette Martinez earlier this year and was the subject of a KPIX 5 report earlier this month.
