6 Monster Waves Reminding Us How Much We Want Mavericks This March

HALF MOON BAY (CBS SF) -- The Titans of Mavericks giant wave surf competition has only four weeks left until the window closes and the annual competition will be called off for lack of waves.  Right now, no potential swells are in sight.

The contest organizers gave Mother Nature from January 1st to March 31st to come up with waves big enough to be worthy of the Mavericks name.  The biggest waves have topped 60 feet, just off the coast of Half Moon Bay.

With that in mind, we give you these 6 awesome wave photos that make us wish for a gnarly storm out in the Pacific big enough to generate the giant swells that would bring the world's 24 best surfers to the Bay Area to compete for a $100,000+ prize.

6. Counting down, let's start with the FUTURE of surfing:  Big Wave legend Laird Hamilton has been perfecting the next frontier in surfing -- riding the hydrofoil surfboard.  He demonstrates his massive skills in this video posted last week on killer waves in New Zealand:

5. This makes the list just because the Billabong Pipeline Masters event of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing reminds us how wimpy every other wave looks compared to Mavericks. This wave was so small, Michel Bourez had to crouch down just to get through.  Still, they did have enough waves to surf, and so far we don't.

4. That's just a big a$$ wave. THAT'S Mavericks.

2. The BIGGEST WAVE ever surfed. This is supposedly the confirmation of a monster, reportedly over 100 feet.  It's not what Mavericks is all about, but it is extraordinary.

1.  This may not be the best shot of a surfer exploding out of a 20-foot diameter tube, but it captures one thing: The destructive power of the most famous surf break in the continental United States. The crushing force of whitewater on the backs of this chaotic break is terrifying. And then you spot the surfer turning into the curl.Mavericks Invitational
