Interactive Map Plots Where In The Bay Area You Can Find Someone Single To Date

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) - Having trouble finding a date? It might be time to blame your neighborhood.

If you and your gal pals are sitting at the local bar on Friday nights wondering why you can't find a good man, the answers may just be that all of their apartments are across town. Around here though, the opposite is more likely. Bay Area men have long been complaining that there are more single men in the Bay Area than women, with the male-heavy tech sector and the high percentage of gay men being the most common explanations. However, there are a number of Bay Area neighborhoods where single women far outnumber men, according to U.S. Census data.

The folks at the blog visualizing.nyc have actually plotted the numbers by zip code and found that straight men of any age living in the Marina District (18 percent more single women than men under 40), Walnut Creek (41% more single women), Central Marin (46% more women) and a handful of other neighborhoods are surrounded by far higher percentage of single women than in other parts of the Bay Area.

The interactive map even lets you set an age range to get a better idea where you'll find the best odds in your preferred dating pool.

However, it's not an exact road map to finding love, as creator Jonathan Soma points out.

"This map doesn't account for sexuality at all, so there are plenty of men in those blue zones with zero interest in women."

As for the most even neighborhoods?

"Sunnyvale, San Jose and Mountain View come up about even between single men and single women, while San Mateo is piles upon piles of single men and Fremont looks as blue as a perfect day at the seashore," says Soma.

There are 68 percent more single men than women under 40 in the 94539 zip code of Fremont, one of the highest percentages of single men on the map. The rate is higher around the Castro District of San Francisco, where you'll find 98% more single men, and Orinda which reports 75% more single men than women in the under 40 range.

The imbalance is so great in some part of the Bay Area that people have proposed flying in women from New York to help even out our local dating scene.
