San Francisco Woman 'Repulsed' After Landlord Demands $6,700 More In Rent Each Month

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – A San Francisco woman is being forced to move out, after her landlord raised her rent by almost $7,000 a month.

Deb Follingstad has lived in a rent-controlled, 2 bedroom apartment in Bernal Heights for more than 10 years.

The tenant recently received a letter from her landlord saying her rent, which is currently around $2,200 a month would go up to $8,900 a month as of May 5th.

"This was not what I expected," Follingstad told KPIX 5. "I'm really repulsed by the whole thing."

The landlord claims the rent increase is legal because the landlord converted the downstairs unit into a storage space, technically turning it into a single-family dwelling.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Follingstad was reportedly reaching out to potential lawyers to take up her case.
