Cal Fire Crew Rescues Man Who Fell Down 200-Foot Cliff Near Santa Cruz

SANTA CRUZ (CBS SF) -- A man was hospitalized after falling some 200 feet from a cliff in a state park near Santa Cruz Saturday morning, according to a Cal Fire captain.

Fire crews responded at 7:53 a.m. to a report of a person over the side of a cliff in the Coast Dairies State Park, near Laguna Road at Highway 1 in Santa Cruz County, according to Cal Fire Capt. David Hibdon.

Cal Fire crews were able to reach the man on foot and Hibdon said they carried him out in a Stokes, or rescue, basket.

The rescue took a little over an hour, Hibdon said.

A medical helicopter and a ground ambulance had both responded to the scene, but Hibdon said the man did not require air transport and was taken to the hospital in a ground ambulance.

Hibdon said he did not know the extent of the man's injuries.

The Santa Cruz Fire Department, state park rangers and Bonny Doon Fire/Rescue Inc. volunteers all assisted in the response, Hibdon said.
