Woman On Morning Jog To Vallejo Waterfront Struck And Killed By Car

VALLEJO (KCBS) — A Vallejo woman was struck and killed by a car while on a Tuesday morning job near the waterfront, according to police. The intersection of Curtola Parkway and Marin Street is said to be dangerous and has no traffic light or stop sign.

According to police, the vehicle, a silver sedan, was travelling eastbound on Curtola when the woman was hit by the car. The fire department responded to the scene around 6 a.m.

"The driver of the vehicle felt like they had hit something and pulled over and realized they had struck a pedestrian," said Police Sgt. Michael Nichelini.

Police said the driver is cooperating with the investigation and that drugs or alcohol do not appear to be a factor.

Friends arrived at the scene of the accident and grieved for the woman, identified by the coroner as 23-year-old Rita Caballero-Orta.

One of her friends said Caballero-Orta was on her way to the waterfront and got hit by the car just two or three minutes after leaving for her run.

The sun had not risen yet at the time of the collision. Original reports said Caballero-Orta was in the crosswalk, but police later said she was not in the crosswalk.

A nine-year-old boy died at the same intersection in 2010, when a truck also heading eastbound, struck him.
