Stanford University Expands Offer Of Free Tuition To More Students

STANFORD (CBS SF) -- Stanford University will become a little more affordable for some students.

The University announced last Friday that it would expand its financial aid program stating that students' tuition will be free if their family earns less than $125,000 dollars. Previously it the cap was $100,000.

"Our highest priority is that Stanford remain affordable and accessible to the most talented students, regardless of their financial circumstances," Provost John Etchemendy said. "Our generous financial aid program accomplishes that, and these enhancements will help even more families, including those in the middle class, afford Stanford without going into debt. Over half of our undergraduates receive financial aid from Stanford, and we are pleased that this program will make it even easier for students to thrive here."

Students whose families earn less than $65,000 will also be exempt from paying room and board.

The average tuition at Stanford cost about $65,000 a year.
