Most BART Tracks 40-Years-Old, Despite Expected 25-Year Lifespan According To Federal Report

OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- There will likely be more BART closures like the one happening this weekend near the Oakland Coliseum as the transit agency works to fix similar problems in other locations.

BART officials say that similar work needs to be done near the Daly City, San Leandro, and Bayfair stations, according to KCBS and Chronicle Insider Phil Matier.

According to an unnamed BART source, the worry is that track ties in those spots could loosen, causing derailments on the elevated crossover rails.

According to a federal report, tracks like those used by BART have an expected lifespan of 25-years, but most of BART's tracks are more than 40-years-old.
