Smoky BART Train At San Francisco's 16th Street Station Prompts Evacuation, Major Delays

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- BART service is recovering Monday morning after a mechanical problem on a train caused smoke to fill the 16th Street Mission station platform.

BART officials reported the incident at 7:15 a.m. and said it is causing major delays for commuters in the East Bay direction.

Passengers got off of the train safely and crews are working to remove the train from the tracks, a BART dispatcher said.

Passenger Matt Waisanen said he was on the platform when he heard a huge crash coming from an East Bay bound train that had just pulled into the station.

"It was like someone slamming a laptop on the ground," Waisanen said. He said the train then came to a halt and the tunnel started filling with smoke.

Other people tweeted a similar experience.

Service is getting back to normal, but there were still residual delays for East Bay-bound trains as of shortly before 8 a.m., the dispatcher said.
