Adults Hosting Underage Drinking Parties In Daly City Now Face Major Fines As Deterrent

DALY CITY (KCBS)— Daly City joins Pacifica as the second city in San Mateo County to enact a social host ordinance. The new law allows police to cite adults for hosting parties with underage drinking.

Mary Bier of North County Prevention Partnership came to endorse the social-host ordinance from a personal tragedy.

"10 years ago my nephew and his girlfriend left a house party and they got into an accident and both of them were killed. If we're letting our kids drink at home, we're creating a culture to that is what they want to do. That's what they expect to do," she said.

Daly City Councilman David Canepa believes fines that hold adults accountable for underage drinking in the home are a deterrent.

"Now what the parent can say is, 'I can get fined by the city of Daly City $1,500.' It gives them the opportunity of saying, 'I'm not going to do it'.

Canepa hopes that the ordinance will serve as a way to engage the community in conversations about underage drinking.
