May Storm May Bring Inches Of Needed Snow To Sierra

KPIX 5 Morning Weather Anchor Roberta Gonzales answers the questions you never get to ask on-air.

Q: Roberta, do you really think we will have rain Thursday and Friday? - Wanda Moore, Antioch

A: Well, if computer modules are correct, we will see light showers beginning in the East Bay Thursday afternoon with the possibility of isolated thunderstorms.

An interesting couple of days are in the forecast. There is a system working its way south from British Columbia and if the timing serves us correctly, it will be positioned over Northern California by Thursday morning. The "storm" (I don't like to use this term unless it's a huge rainmaker) WILL bring rain and thunderstorms to the Eastern portion of California and the Great Basin. However, as this system moves south and west, it increases the possibility of scattered showers here in the Bay Area.

When a low pressure system takes this track, I refer to it as an "inside slider." Instead of dragging from the North Bay to the South Bay, the low is hitting us from our "backdoor," the East Bay! By Friday, the system kicks East again, generating a chance of a lingering shower and generating the potential for dicey weather in the High Sierra!

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 11am Thursday to 5pm Friday for Yosemite to Kings Canyon above 6000 feet. Up to 4 inches of snow is expected! The greatest concern is for back country campers and hikers using Tioga Pass.

Another Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for the west slope of the Northern Sierra Nevada for 5am Thursday to 5 am Friday above 6,500 feet. This includes Echo Summit, Carson Pass, Ebbetts Pass and Sonora Pass. Up to 4 inches of snow is expected.

I will be keeping a watchful eye on the sky and firing up our LIVE Hi Def Doppler Radar tomorrow beginning at 4:30am on KPIX 5! Please join us!

I would love to hear from you! Please send weather questions, observations and photos to me, Gonzales@kpix.cbs.com and I look forward to hearing from you!
