Surviving Members Of TLC To Make Comeback After Successful Kickstarter

SAN JOSE (KPIX 5) – One of the hottest groups of the 90s and one of the hottest girl groups ever is making a comeback, thanks to a Kickstarter campaign and some die-hard fans.

TLC is the best-selling girl group in U.S. history, and singing and dancing to sellout crowds. More than 65 million records sold around the world, with hits like "No Scrubs," "Waterfalls" and "Baby-Baby-Baby."

The R&B and hip-hop group defined pop culture in the 90s. More than 20 years later, they're holding down the stage on tour this summer with New Kids on the Block. But they're not stopping here.

Surviving members T-Boz and Chilli asked their fans to help fund their final album in more than 12 years via Kickstarter, instead of going with a big record label.

It's a move that is out of the box. "That's what we do. The fact that so many of our fans have been wanting new music for many, many years, we felt like that was the right direction," Chilli told KPIX 5.

When asked if they needed fans to pay for their new album, Chilli responded, "No, we wanted to do it with them. Our fans, I'm telling you, they are the most amazing fans."

The fans have responded. In less than three days, the duo raised three times their goal, bringing in $430,000.

Depending on how much fans pledged, they can get backstage VIP access, autographed shirts, even a workout session or slumber party with the ladies.

This actually isn't the first time TLC's connected with fans digitally.

"When we were the first to do mp3.com they thought we were crazy, they're like, 'They're psycho, what are they doing?'" said T-Boz. "And then when we smashed and killed it, we were brilliant. And this is something that is innovative and new."

It also comes with freedom in the studio.

"We don't have to worry about a lot of things you know when we go in there as far as what we want to talk about, who we want to work with, all those things we can do freely," Chilli said.

This will be TLC's first album since 2002. That was the year the group's third member, Left Eye, died in a car crash in Honduras.
