Suspects Arrested After Fast-Acting SFPD Recruits Stop Smash And Grab Burglary In Progress

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- A group fast-acting of San Francisco Police Academy recruits got a chance to put their training into use early when they passed by a store where a burglary was happening Sunday.

The trainees were on a bus heading to the Bay to Breakers race to do traffic control when they spotted a suspect smash a display case inside a retail store in the 800 block of Market Street. They quickly alerted the Police Academy training officers accompanying them.

Police jumped off the bus and nabbed Cory Lawler of Fremont, and Dale Brackner of Brisbane as they fled the store with items stolen from the store. Both were booked on burglary and possession of stolen property charges at the San Francisco Jail.

"This arrest provided the recruits...an opportunity put their training into action and see first-hand how an arrest and investigation unfolds, sometimes in just a matter of seconds," said Captain Greg Yee, Commanding Officer of the Police Academy.

The trainees were members of the 244th Recruit Class.
