'Speed Bump Fairies' Answer Grieving Antioch Mom's Wish
ANTIOCH (KPIX 5) – After a grieving Antioch mom expressed her frustration over the city's inaction following her son's death by a hit-and-run driver, a group of mystery men installed speed bumps to slow down speeders.
The Hudson family is calling the four men the "Speed Bump Fairies." Linda Hudson and her husband Jerry said they showed up Friday afternoon.
"Pulled up in three pickup trucks, got out," Linda Hudson told KPIX 5,
"Started hauling their equipment out," Jerry Hudson recalled.
The workers finished quickly. "I want to name it 'Timmy's Speed Bump,'" Linda said.
Timothy is Linda's son. The 47-year-old was killed May 11th by a hit-and-run driver who the Hudsons said was doing donuts on their street. When Tim confronted the driver, they said the man ran him over and kept driving.
The suspected driver, 19-year-old Antioch resident Fredy Castaneda-Longoria, has been arrested.
In a city council meeting Tuesday, Linda vowed to have speed bumps built, even if she had to do it herself.
"If I have to be the one to drill them into the pavement, so be it!" Linda told KPIX 5 earlier this week.
It was after KPIX 5 interviewed Linda on Thursday that her hopes came true.
Traffic is moving now slowly down West 11th Street today, more slowly than it ever has. Neighbors seem to like them, and Linda is slowly finding some peace.
"I backed my son up. He lost his life, but maybe he's gonna save somebody else's because of this," Linda said.
