Oakland Father Who Shot, Hit Teen With Baseball Bat For Beating Up His Son Could Spend 32 Years In Prison

HAYWARD (CBS SF) -- An Oakland man has been convicted of premeditated attempted murder for shooting a former San Lorenzo High School student who had beaten up his son last year.

Jurors, who deliberated for less than two full days before reaching their verdict on Wednesday, also convicted 48-year-old Darren Andre Cleveland of shooting from a vehicle with an enhancement for causing great bodily injury, assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Alameda County prosecutors said Cleveland spent a number of weeks hunting down the 16-year-old victim after the youth was expelled from school for beating up Cleveland's 15-year-old son.

Cleveland eventually located the 16-year-old while he was walking to the REACH Ashland Youth Center in unincorporated San Leandro and struck him on his right thigh with a baseball bat, prosecutors said.

The 16-year-old boy fled but Cleveland chased him down in his car and fired at least seven shots at the youth, hitting him once in the shoulder, according to prosecutors.

Cleveland faces a potential sentence of 32 years to life in state prison when he's sentenced by Alameda County Superior Court Judge Kevin Murphy on July 9.
