San Carlos Man Dies After Mount Shasta Fall Despite Desperate Attempts By Rescuers To Save Him

MOUNT SHASTA (CBS SF) -- Rescuers tried to save a Bay Area man by using a camelback for a tracheotomy after he fell on Mount Shasta, but the man eventually died.

Rescuers say 57-year old Michael Murphy of San Carlos may have fallen up to 2000 feet while climbing in the Red Banks area north of Lake Helen last Thursday.

Rescuers tried to save him by using a camelback tube for a tracheotomy.

He was airlifted off the mountain at 10,000 feet by a CHP helicopter, but died of his injuries before making it to the hospital.
