SJPD's New Drone Program Hovers Closer To Reality As Vote Looms

(KCBS) – The San Jose City Council is expected to give the Police Department's proposed one-year drone pilot program the green light on Tuesday.

The department already has the drone - it got it last year - and it's been at the focus of debate ever since. Critics say they're concerned about privacy.

But Mayor Sam Liccardo says the drone will only be used in specific situations, like during an active shooting or for investigating an explosive device. He says it would NOT be allowed to fly at night, nor could it record video.

If the City Council gives its okay, the next step is getting approval from the FAA.
