Inmates Riot At State Prison In Folsom; 1 Dead

FOLSOM (CBS SF) -- An inmate at the California State Prison-Sacramento (SAC) in Folsom was killed during a riot Wednesday, according to authorities.

The Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said inmates at the maximum-security prison began fighting in one of the general population yards just before 1:00 p.m.

Inmate-made weapons were used during the riot and an unknown number of inmates were injured, including at least five who were stabbed and hospitalized outside the facility, according to the CDCR.

Other inmates were being treated at the prison's on-site medical unit.

Correctional officers used pepper spray and fired warning shots to break up the riot, said the CDCR. No officers or staff were hurt.

SAC, commonly known as New Folsom Prison, is adjacent to Folsom State Prison and houses about 2,300 inmates.

In September 1996, a corrections officer shot and killed an inmate during a riot involving 150 inmates. 13 other inmates were hurt.

Another large-scale riot occured in 2011 at the prison, with two inmates getting stabbed multiple times and taken to an outside hospital for treatment.
