Mountain Bike Park Set To Open In Novato; 1st-Of-Its-Kind In North Bay

NOVATO (CBS SF) -- Marin County has taken the wraps off a brand new bicycle park designed for riders of all ages and abilities.

The park is located at Stafford Lake County Park in Novato. It features slalom courses, jumps, berms and gravity fed flow trails and is designed for riders of all ages and abilities, including beginners. On Saturday, the 17-acre park will be open to the public

The park is a collaborative effort by the county and a number of private firms and individuals who have donated more than $700,000 to get the project off the ground.

The family atmosphere built into the park is what convinced Julia Violich to lead the non-profit that raised the money build it.

"And that this would be kind of a pioneering bike park that wouldn't be destroyed after the first rain or after a couple people rode it," said Violich.

The park is the first-of-its-kind in Marin County and the North Bay, considered by many as the birthplace of mountain biking,

It's believed Stafford Lake park will become a major destination for riders. "We are expecting big crowds, yeah," said Landscape Architect Stephen Petterle. " I think it's going to be popular, not only throughout Marin, but throughout the region."

Saturday's grand opening event will feature live music and refreshments and is free to the public. After that the standard admission to the park will be $10.
