USS Oakland: Navy's Newest Warship Named After East Bay City

OAKLAND (CBS SF) – The United States Navy is honoring Oakland with its latest warship.

Naval Secretary Ray Mabus officially announced the littoral combat ship will be named the USS Oakland, during a ceremony at the Oakland A's game on Wednesday.

Officials said construction of the vessel by shipbuilder Austal begins in November 2016.

The USS Oakland is expected to be completed in 2018.

According to the Navy Times, there have been two other naval ships named the USS Oakland. The first was a cargo ship commissioned in 1918. The second ship with the name was an Atlanta-class light cruiser that was in service during World War II.
