San Francisco Offers An Ocean Full Of Employment Prospects
Business is booming in San Francisco. Where there is coffee, there are people to drink it. Popular Blue Bottle Coffee announced plans to open two new locations in the bay area, one of which will be located in the Twitter headquarters. This expansion is warranted. San Francisco has seen an increase in commercial real estate development. Other companies are taking note, as well. Virgin Airlines is banking on the expansion by offering flights from Hawaii to San Francisco in November.
Those in the best position to take advantage of the business boom are those with the education to follow their dreams. According to David Haase, who is the CEO of Peninsula Accounting Services in San Francisco, he decided to earn a master's degree from Stanford University because it helped with opportunities. "I pursued a master's degree to figure out what I wanted to do with my life, and open up opportunities that might otherwise be closed. I went to Stanford not only because it was a great school but, because of the entrepreneurs that go through the program," he said.
Annie Ma-Weaver is head of an operations team at Google. Ma-Weaver is in charge of sales operations for emerging businesses for the Google for Work division.
"I'm pursuing an M.B.A. for three reasons: the credential, the academics and the people. A senior leader at Google told me that she had gotten her first executive role because of her M.B.A.; the other candidate had equal work experience but lacked the degree. She urged me to pursue a M.B.A.so that not having one was never the reason I didn't get a role or opportunity. I had been working for about five years in operations when I started my M.B.A.. I wanted to learn about the areas of business – such as finance, accounting and strategy – that I hadn't worked in and round out my knowledge of business," said Ma-Weaver.
"The biggest reward I got from my M.B.A.was access to a network of business leaders. A few have become my closest friends, and many continue to inspire me to dream big," said Haase.
