Police Recover San Ramon Man's $110,000 Mustang
SAN RAMON (CBS SF) – A Ford Mustang race car that was stolen in front of a San Ramon man's home earlier this week has been recovered in Oakland, authorities announced Friday.
The San Ramon Police Department tweeted Friday evening that the car was recovered undamaged in Oakland, with the help of the California Highway Patrol.
Mike Chadwick, who owns the car, told KPIX 5 on Wednesday that he spent 12 years restoring the Mustang, which he nicknamed "Red." The owner said his 1967 muscle car was worth $110,000.
Chadwick said three thieves stole the Mustang, along with the Ford pickup and trailer carrying the race car, around 2:00 Tuesday afternoon. The owner believes the thieves targeted him after he raced the Mustang at Sonoma Raceway over the weekend.
"They had to have gone to the race, saw my car perform. It was a fast car and they probably followed me home and came back the next day and stole it," Chadwick told KPIX 5.
According to a statement from San Ramon police, police found the pickup in Oakland on Friday. San Ramon detectives processed the truck for evidence and the CHP conducted an helicopter search of the area.
During the search, the CHP found a trailer matching the description of the one stolen from San Ramon at a storage yard near Railroad Avenue and Clara Street.
A search warrant was served at the storage yard after 7:00 p.m., police said. The trailer was found with its decals removed and the Mustang was found inside the trailer.
Authorities said no one has been taken into custody in connection with the theft. The case remains under investigation.
