MIDDLETOWN (CBS SF) — At least eight firefighters lost their homes to the Valley Fire burning in Lake and Napa counties.

Many of those firefighters received word that their residences were in danger as they battled flames in other communities.

One firefighter whose home was spared talked about seeing his house still standing.

“As I came around the corner and saw it, I didn’t know what to do, I just started crying,” Firefighter Don Lopez said.

Hundreds of homes were destroyed by the fire that started Saturday, and consumed 40,000 acres in just 12 hours.
