Oakland A's Call Up Barry Zito From Minor Leagues

OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- Former Oakland Athletics and San Francisco Giants pitcher Barry Zito is getting another run at pitching for the A's following a season-long stint in the minor leagues.

Zito, who last pitched in 2013 for the Giants, was added to the A's roster Wednesday after spending the season with Oakland's Triple-A Nashville team.

The 37-year-old Zito was a three-time All-Star and a Cy Young Award winner during his seven seasons with Oakland.

He then signed a seven-year deal with the Giants in December 2006 which at the time was the largest contract ever given to a pitcher.

Zito struggled to match his previous successes during his stint with the Giants and was left off the postseason roster during the Giants 2010 World Series run.

In 2012, a resurgent Zito helped the Giants capture their second World Series title, including pitching what could be best game of his career – Game 5 of the National League Championship Series against the St. Louis Cardinals where he threw a shutout for nearly eight innings and earned the win.

Zito pitched in his first and only World Series game that season, earning a win in Game 2 on the way to a sweep of the Detroit Tigers.

After the Giants bought out his option at the end of the 2013 season, Zito did not pitch in the 2014 season. He spent spring training 2015 with the A's and was assigned to the Nashville Sounds, where he has spent the entire season.

Zito was called up after the A's lost starter Jesse Chavez to a rib injury.
