Anti-Porn Group Brings Billboard Campaign To Bay Area

SAN JOSE (KPIX 5) – Dozens of new billboards popping up around the Bay Area have a message that's hard to miss.

Their message: "Porn Kills Love. Fight for Love." One of the billboards, located in San Jose's Willow Glen neighborhood, has raised concerns because it's outside a barber shop for adults and children.

"They walk out, make a left, these guys can read. 'Hey Mom, what does that mean?' Good luck, Mom, explaining that one away," said Rick Holguin of Deluxe Barber. "I'm a little upset, sure."

The Utah-based nonprofit "Fight the New Drug" has put up 80 billboards in the Bay Area since September. Founded by Mormons, the group said they're continuing a seven-year campaign against pornography.

On their website, Fight the New Drug calls porn unhealthy, bad for relationships, disrespectful and abusive.

The group's CEO says the billboards target the Bay Area "because it's full of thought leaders, social entrepreneurs, and world changers."

But some residents say it's inappropriate subject matter for their neighborhood.

"Yeah, porn is around, but we don't need to see it on a sign," said Jesse Cabrera of San Jose.

Some pornography supporters told KPIX 5 that the billboards are offensive and their claims are wrong.

The billboards are scheduled to stay up through November. The nonprofit then plans to release a documentary on pornography with the same message next summer.
