Police ID Suspect Who Slashed Tires Of Several Parked Cars In San Leandro

SAN LEANDRO (CBS SF) -- Police have identified a man who officers arrested Monday on suspicion of vandalism, after a number of parked vehicles at a San Leandro apartment complex had their tires slashed early Sunday morning.

Using a large knife of similar tool, police said 35-year-old Hayward resident Brandon Thompson slashed one or more tires of at least 16 vehicles parked at the Parkside Commons Apartment Homes, located at 900 143rd Ave.

Around 4:30 a.m., a resident of the complex called police to report a man slashing the tires of parked cars, according to police.

The resident had awoken to the sound of what he thought initially was a gas leak, until he looked outside and witnessed the suspect in action, police said.

Police responded shortly thereafter and determined that the suspect had intentionally punctured the tires, causing them to deflate, according to police.

Initially, officers were unable to locate the suspect.

Eventually, investigators were able to gather enough information to identify Thompson as a suspect. Thompson has family living in the complex, according to police.

At about 1:30 p.m. Monday afternoon, detectives located and arrested Thompson near B and Third streets in Hayward. According to police, the damages exceed an estimated $5,000, which qualifies the crime as a felony, police said.

Thompson's motive remains under investigation, according to police.

Thompson is expected appear in court on Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m., police said.
